November 29th: Stories of Nine Men, Nine Lives, One Great War

We are holding two special storytelling events based on the lives of the 9 men of Walkley Reform Club who are commemorated in the First World War memorial windows in Walkley Community Centre.

The stories will be performed by acclaimed storyteller Simon Heywood, and events will be suitable for adults and children aged 8 and over. The lives of the men will be brought vividly and dramatically alive in stories that will take the men from Sheffield civilians and Reform Club members to soldiers fighting and dying on the Western Front.

The events are based on theresearch of the Walkley Historians who have brought these 9 men back as residents of Walkley and Crookes and traced their lives from birth through childhood, early careers to enlisting in the army and their deaths on the battlefields of France and Flanders. You can read their histories on our First World War pages.

There will be two performances during the afternoon of Saturday 29th November at Walkley Community Centre. One begins at 2:00pm and the other at 3:30pm. Doors open thirty minutes before each performance. Crookes First World War historian Gavin Holliday will have a display of original war time objects, uniforms and maps.

There will be a small cafe run to raise funds for Walkley Community Centre.

Tickets are available exclusively from award-winning Beeches of Walkley. They are priced £2.50 each.
